cows are naturally curious, clever and fun loving !! scientists found out in studies that cows could be trained to
find food in mazes. when given the space they will run with each other, play chase and enjoy toying with a ball :-)
did you know they have a sight range of 300 degrees while humans only have a range of 180 degrees ? this is because their eyes are set on the sides
of their head ! this allows them to see whats coming up beside and behind them with ease. this range increases to almost 360 degrees when they are grazing :-)
they have an amazing sense of hearing that is very similar to a dog, which is why loud noises can stress them !! this is paired with an excellent sense of smell.
they can catch a whiff of an odour from up to 8km away ! all of this is to help them better detect danger and possible attacks :-) not so defenseless !!
positive human contact with cows improves the human-animal relationship ! the positive effects of gentle stroking on the neck,
reduce cows fear of humans, regardless of their personality type :-) they also love scritches under their chins !!
cows can make friends !! they can form social bonds with other cows and feel stressed when separated from their preferred partners.
these friendships can be lifelong too. they can also hold grudges.
cows have great spatial memory and can remember where things are located, such as water and shelter. they also can recognize and remember the faces of their herd mates !
always be nice when meeting a cow because they will remember you ;-)
a cow might be a very different colour to how they'll look like as an adult !! also, holstein cows spots are like a fingerprint: no two
cows have exactly the same pattern of black and white spots !!
cows cant see the color red. not only is bullfighting cruel, it also is ironic considering the color of the cape used in the practice !!
have you ever made eye contact with a cow ? if you have, you may know how they're feeling.
for instance, an increase in the whites of a cows eyes can be seen when theyre feeling scared or frustrated, while a decrease in the whites of a cows eyes occurs when theyre relaxed !! :-)
and with their ears too !! like sheep and pigs, the position of a cow's ears can also indicate how they are feeling !!
the usual position of a cow's ears is upright or forwards, but a cow who is feeling calm and at ease will display ears in a backward or hanging posture.
so cute !!
The friendly cow all red and white,
I love with all my heart:
She gives me cream with all her might,
To eat with apple tart.
She wanders lowing here and there,
And yet she cannot stray,
All in the pleasant open air,
The pleasant light of day;
And blown by all the winds that pass
And wet with all the showers,
She walks among the meadow grass
And eats the meadow flowers.
I never saw a Purple Cow,
I never hope to see one,
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one!
The new cow came
through the gate,
And her calf came after, a little late.
No longer willing to be led,
The calf went on ahead,
While she stood to look around
Over the hills and lower ground
Stood shyly, defiantly there,
Smelling flower-fragrant air,
And gazed toward the old cows
Grouped on the way before.
Knowing not how she might stay
Among them, stranger still,
She hesitated yet, now they had turned
At the foot of the hill
And seemed to wait for her at the gate,
To wait for her who was strange and thin,
Til she came on,
And they opened their ranks
To take her in.
Tomorrow when the farm boys find this
freak of nature, they will wrap his body
in newspaper and carry him to the museum.
But tonight he is alive and in the north
field with his mother. It is a perfect
summer evening: the moon rising over
the orchard, the wind in the grass.
And as he stares into the sky, there
are twice as many stars as usual.
